Writing and Research Methods/Professional Practices

All HASS majors are required to take a class in Writing and Research Methods or Professional Practices, to be taken during the junior year. The course prepares students for academic and professional work in their chosen major area while developing the senior thesis or capstone project as the culmination of major study. Courses that fulfill this requirement for various majors in HASS include:

BA in Literature, Philosophy, Science Communication: HQSS 301 / HST 301 Research Design and Methods

BA in Music & Technology: HMU 301 Communication Practices

BA in Visual Arts & Technology: HAR 302 Professional Workshop

BS in STS: HQSS 301 / HST 301 Research Design and Methods

BS in Quantitative Social Science: HQSS 301 / HST 301 Research Design and Methods

Senior Thesis/Capstone

All HASS students, with the exception of Visual Arts and Technology majors, take the following classes:

HASS 498

Thesis Preparation

3 - 6

HASS 499

Senior Thesis

4 - 8

HASS 498: first semester of senior year

HASS 499: second semester of senior year

Visual Arts and Technology majors take the following equivalent courses:

HAR 498

Capstone I

3

HAR 499

Capstone II

4

HASS 498: first semester of senior year

HASS 499: second semester of senior year

These classes all require formal registration. Midterm and final grades will be given. Students must pass HASS/HAR 498 in order to register for HASS/HAR 499. If HASS/HAR 498 has to be retaken, the completion of the thesis will be postponed for at least one semester. The sequence of classes is necessary to ensure adequate preparation for thesis writing or capstone project implementation. All graduating HASS majors participate in the Stevens Innovation Expo.

Courses in Computing, Mathematics, and Sciences

HASS majors must also take courses in computing, math, and science. HASS major students have specific requirements in these areas.

Four mandatory courses for all majors are distributed as follows:

Computing

3

Mathematics

6

Science

3

In addition to the courses listed above, majors in the B.S. degree in Science, Technology, and Society (STS) must take two additional science courses. Majors in QSS must take the following sequence of math and computer science courses: CS 105, CS 115, MA 121, MA 122, MA 125, MA 126, MA 331 and either MA 222 OR BT 221. QSS majors also have one additional math/computer science elective that can be chosen from the following list: MA 232, MA 227, CS 135, CS 284.
