The Combined B.S.-M.D. Program is an opportunity to earn the B.S. degree in Chemical Biology at Stevens and the M.D. degree at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School (NJMS) in a total of seven years. If you are a high school senior who has demonstrated academic excellence, in the top 10% of your class, with a combined SAT score of at least 1400 and a promise for a career in medicine, you can be considered for the B.S.-M.D. program. Admission to this program is highly competitive, and an interview at both Stevens and the medical school is required. If accepted to this program, you must complete three years in the Accelerated Chemical Biology program with a GPA of at least 3.50, grades in all of the premed courses at least B (not B-) or above, and you take the MCAT exam. Normally, you would take the MCAT exam your junior year at Stevens (3rd year) and submit to NJMS for approval. Stevens awards the B.S. degree upon successful completion of the first year of medical studies.
Note: If you are admitted to the accelerated chemical biology program, you'll take the same courses as the science majors in the first year, adding other program requirements during the following semesters at Stevens, and then enter the medical school at the beginning of your fourth year. Transfer credit for courses taken in the first year of study at the medical school are used to complete the requirements of the Bachelor of Science degree.
Notes:
(1) Humanities: Please see Humanities Requirements for specific requirements. Humanities electives for Accelerated Chemical Biology must include HQSS 141 and HQSS 175 . To prepare for the MCAT, these electives must be taken before Term V.
(2) SUCCESS Core Curriculum: Students must complete requirements including PRV 101, and three (3) courses from PRV 201, PRV 202, PRV 203, PRV 204, PRV 205
Notes:
(1) Inorganic Chemistry, course, is required if you wish to pursue ACS certification and is only offered in Spring semester. If you are interested, it can be taken in Term V or Term VII. It can be used to fulfill a general elective or technical elective in addition to the ACS certification.
2) Technical Electives can be selected from available CH and BIO 300, 400, and 500- level courses that are not already included in your degree program requirements. Suggested technical electives for the Chemical Biology program include the following:
BIO 307, BIO 392, BIO 485, BIO 487, BIO 507, BIO 508, BIO 526, BIO 586, BIO 584, CH 412, CH 520, CH 550, CH 574, BME 504, BME 505, BME 515, BME 561, CHE 560, MT 581, CS 544, PME 530/CHE 530, BME 508/MT 508.
Whichever of BIO 568 and BIO 583 you choose as a core course, the other may be chosen as a Technical Elective.
If you are interested in a taking a course related to biology of chemistry in another department not on this list, please contact your academic advisor.
(3) General Electives can be selected from available courses offered by programs in SES, SOB and HASS (including CH/BIO courses). Approval from the student’s advisor and the course instructor may be required.
Recommended general elective if planning to pursue an engineering master's would be: course Differential Equations.
Recommended general elective courses connected to the major include: course Quantitative Biology and course Modern Physics.
